Language Learning Experience Design

Overview

Lansum is a language learning platform that is incentive and growth oriented, providing a community of professional support and well-rounded resources for language learners.
The goal of this project was to adopt gamification to provide anyone a fun experience with strong engagement and to visualize marketing strategy of a sustainable linguistic learning community.

Background

Using Gamification with gaming elements in instructional design can motivate users to stay focus and eventually get the result they want. I wanted to create a language learning platform where grammar and traditional study contents are not the only source of materials a user could go for. I also wanted this platform to involve more engagements more users including teachers and third parties.

Goals

A systematic design of instructional materials with additional rescues to learn would be provided on the platform.

Language Learners would be able to start from a level they are and feel comfortable with instead of doing everything from the very beginning. They would be stay focused on the learning journey, while getting rewards to keep the whole process entertained and resourceful.

Teachers would be able to upload their own course series and getting paid through coins from gamings, which would be unlocked with coins users getting rewarded or extra coins users paid for.

I did a competitor analysis in order to find the gap on market by identifying potential strength and weakness of the platform.

As reliable and realistic representations of my key audience references, two user personas are created including the learner and the instructor.

 Onboarding Process

The onboarding process offers varieties of language options, target groups, and comprehensive levels to users, making it flexible and personalized.

Guest mode makes it easier for users to try out the platform without having to commit to it yet.

 

Progressive Learning

Users are able to use images, audios, and texts with suggestions to enhance the learning experience with a progressive difficulty.

They can check their progress through the progress bar and what contents are unlocked in the course journey - a metaphor used from the syllabus.

*Gamification: users will be rewarded with coins each time they finish a course to unlock more contents. The incentive keeps users engaged in the product. Users can also pay a fee from a plan to subscribe with more or all contents unlocked.

 

Learning through the News

Users can select third party news designed for language learning with the option of text translations.

 

Learning through Cultures

Content creators will be able to join the platform to provide cultural materials from the perspective of a native speaker. The completion of listening exercises gives users more rewards, and creators will be benefited from the payment sponsored in ads.

 

Profile and Settings

Users can edit their preferences and access all the rewards rewarded or purchased from this platform.

A dark UI design system should be implemented because it helps with focusing and decreasing eye strain.

A responsive version such as tablet should be implemented to facilitate users that are not on mobiles.

Outcomes

  • Designed an instructional mobile platform that is incentive oriented and creative content focused. Generated optimal users’ learning experience and service’s marketing strategies through gamification.

  • Created a simple experience in a complex design system with design thinking and UX design principles.
